Bright Beings Academy – Frequently Asked Questions

Dahn Master - Peter Paul Parker

Welcome. This page brings together the most common questions people ask about Qi Gong, our classes, memberships and how everything works at the Bright Beings Academy.

Whether you’re completely new to Qi Gong, returning to movement after a break, or exploring our Mystery School and sound healing work, you’ll find clear, down-to-earth answers here.

If your question isn’t covered, you’re always welcome to reach out and ask.

Getting Started with Qi Gong

Do I need any experience to join a Qi Gong class?

No, you don’t need any experience at all. Most people who join the Academy are beginners or are returning to movement after a long break. Peter teaches a joyful Korean style of Qi Gong that is very accessible. You’ll be guided step by step, with options to make movements smaller or simpler if you need to.

If you prefer a gentle starting point, you can try the 21-day mini course:

What equipment or space do I need at home?

You don’t need any special equipment.

  • A small, clear space where you can stand and lift your arms is enough.

  • Comfortable clothing you can move in.

  • Bare feet or non-slip socks are fine.

Many people practise in their living room, bedroom or a quiet corner of their home.

I feel unfit and stiff. Is Qi Gong still suitable for me?

Yes. In fact, this is one of the most common reasons people start. Qi Gong uses slow, repetitive movements, breath and gentle stretching. You are never asked to force your body. You’re free to make the movements smaller, sit down if needed, or have a rest.

Over time, many people notice better balance, flexibility and confidence in their body.

Health, Safety and Medical Conditions

Is Qi Gong safe if I have a health condition?

Qi Gong is a gentle, low-impact practice and is often suitable for people with long-term health conditions. However, it is not a replacement for medical care.

  • Always check with your GP or healthcare professional before starting any new exercise.

  • Let Peter know about your condition so he can suggest simple adaptations.

You can also explore condition-specific guides alongside medical advice, such as:

Qi Gong & Cardiovascular Health: Blood Pressure, HRV & Heart Health

Always listen to your body. If anything hurts, you stop or make the movement smaller.

Can I do Qi Gong during cancer treatment or recovery?

Some people use gentle Qi Gong alongside their medical treatment to help with fatigue, mood and sleep. However, everyone’s situation is different.

Please:

  • Speak to your oncologist or nurse specialist before starting.

  • Let them know it is a gentle, slow movement practice, not a high-intensity workout.

  • Only do what feels safe and manageable on the day.

Qi Gong is a support, not a cure. Your medical team always comes first.

Is Qi Gong suitable during pregnancy or postpartum?

Qi Gong can often be adapted during pregnancy or after birth, but you should always:

  • Get clearance from your midwife, GP or obstetrician.

  • Avoid strong twisting or any movement that feels straining.

  • Honour your energy levels and rest when needed.

We keep movements gentle and focus on breath, grounding and relaxation. If in doubt, check with your healthcare provider first.

Tech, Access and Practicalities

All live classes are delivered via the online video platform.

Once you sign up:

  • You’ll receive a confirmation email with the class link.

  • The email is sent to you an hour before the class so you have plenty of time to prepare.

Try to join a few minutes early so you can settle your space and check your sound.

What if I can’t attend live – are recordings available?

There are many on demand classes, so you can practise later in your own time. There are also many of the individual forms for you to practise in the member's area. See more about the online classes here:

I am not very “techy”. Will I cope?

Yes. We keep things as simple as possible.

  • You need to set zoom up for your computer, which is easy and there is a full explanation of how to do that. Please make sure you do that ahead of time for the class.

  • You click a link in your email to join the class.

  • Your device will open the live session.

  • You don’t need to be on camera if you don’t want to be.

If you are worried, you can test your device beforehand or ask a friend or family member to help you set it up the first time.

Results, Evidence and Expectations

How long will it take to feel a difference?

Everyone is different, but many people report:

  • Feeling calmer and more relaxed after their very first session

  • Better sleep or mood after a few classes

  • Improvements in balance, flexibility and energy over several weeks

Qi Gong works best as a regular, gentle practice, not a one-off “quick fix”. Even 10–15 minutes most days can add up over time.

Is there any scientific evidence for Qi Gong?

There is a growing body of research suggesting Qi Gong and similar mind–body practices may help with:

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Balance and fall risk in older adults

  • Certain aspects of pain, fatigue and quality of life

You can explore evidence overviews on the Academy blog, such as:

Remember: Qi Gong is a complementary practice. It does not replace medical treatment or professional mental health support.

Spirituality, Mystery School and Sound Healing

Is this religious? What if I follow a different faith or none?

Bright Beings Academy is not tied to any single religion.

We explore energy, consciousness and spiritual themes in a grounded, open way. You are always free to take what resonates and leave the rest. Many people from different backgrounds enjoy the practices alongside their own beliefs.

What is the Mystery School part of the Academy?

The Mystery School explores the “bigger questions” in life – using teachings from ancient traditions such as Hermetic philosophy, sacred geometry and more, presented in clear, modern language.

It is for people who:

  • Feel drawn to spiritual growth and symbolism

  • Want structure and guidance without rigid dogma

  • Enjoy combining practice (like Qi Gong and meditation) with deep study

You can explore current classes here:

Mystery School

What role does sound healing play in your work?

Peter is also a sound healer. He uses instruments such as gongs, singing bowls and other vibrational tools to help:

  • Calm the nervous system

  • Release tension and emotional stress

  • Support deeper meditation and rest

Sound healing may be woven into classes, workshops or separate sessions, always with a focus on safety and gentleness:

Practical and Contact Questions

Can I come to an in-person class or workshop?

Bright Beings Academy also runs in-person classes and workshops from time to time, especially in South West London and Surrey. Availability changes, so the best way to check is to visit the website or join the mailing list for updates. You do need to book in advance for the workshops. But most classes are pay as you go.

How do I contact you if I have another question?

If your question isn’t answered here, you can reach out via the contact details on the website. We’re happy to help you work out the best starting point for your situation.

Still Have a Question or Ready to Begin?

If you’re feeling curious – or a little nervous – that’s completely natural. You don’t have to be fit, flexible or “spiritual enough” to start. You simply need a body that can move a little, a willingness to listen to yourself, and the courage to try something gentle and new.

Here are simple next steps:

And if you’re still unsure which option is right for you, just reach out via the contact details on the site, and we’ll happily point you in the right direction. Use the contact link below.
